Intellectual property (IP) law encompasses a wide area of legal practices including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and unfair competition, among other areas. IP law protects ingenuity, intellect, creativity, and the fruits of labor (and sometimes the labor itself) under state, federal, and international statutes, treaties, and case law. IP rights are constitutionally protected in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, which states:
